Sabah's Homestay Programme

1. What is homestay programme?
Homestay Programme is an experience where tourists stay with selected families, interact and experience the daily life of these families as well as experiencing Malaysian culture. Homestay is not classified as an accomodation facilities. It focuses more on lifestyle and experience, which include culture and economic activities.

2. What type of activities offered at these homestays?
Different homestay offers different types of activities depending on the culture, food, economic activities and even location. Each state in Malaysia is unique with its own culture, ranging from the “Nasi Dagang” (localize food) in Kelantan to the Sumazau dance in Sabah, as well as living in longhouses in Sarawak. Examples of activities during your stay with our homestays include:

  • Traditional dances, songs and food
  • Traditional games/sports
  • Culture: wedding, events and gatherings
(ii) Economic Activities
  • Rubber tapping
  • Fish farming
  • Agriculture: paddy, cocoa, palm oil, fruits

  • Visiting nearby tourism products
(iv) Environmental Conservation
  • Plant a Tree (PAT) program: Each tourist is encouraged to plant a tree at the homestay they visited with the aim to contribute towards the conservation of the environment as well as beautifying the landscape of the homestay.

3. Do I need to know the local language during a homestay visit?
Not necessarily. Basic English is commonly understood by the local community. Each host is also equipped with a pocket dictionary in various languages for basic words and phrases for communication. It is also our aim for you to take this opportunity to converse in Bahasa Malaysia with your gracious hosts as part of your experience in a homestay. (Terima Kasih – Thank you).

4. What is the package cost for visiting a homestay?
A basic 2 days 1 night homestay package can range from RM150 to RM250 including accommodation, meals and activities (fee depending on the activities offered by the operators as well as requests from the tourists). 4. How to make reservation to visit Malaysian Homestay?
Details for each packages and costs are available at the official Malaysian Homestay Website at http://www.go2homestay.com. Tourists can choose which state they would like to visit and what kind of activities they would like to experience. Directions to the homestay as well as contact information of each homestay coordinator are also available on the website for you to contact directly to make reservation.

The Malaysian Tourism Centre (MaTiC), a One-Stop Information Centre located at Jalan Ampang could also facilitate you in making reservations for your homestay visits.
